About Interference Series
At Interference Series, we believe in the power of music to unite and inspire. We are committed to providing opportunities for musicians to explore their creativity, connect with audiences, and contribute to positive social change through music.
Our Mission
Founded in 2015, the Interference Series in Flagstaff, Arizona, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to presenting the work of local, national, and international artists that is experimental, avant-garde, or radical in nature. By providing a consistent home for this innovative and exciting art, we aim to serve as a platform for musicians, poets, performance artists, visual artists, dancers, and other yet-to-be-defined styles of performers. Our mission also includes building and educating an open and curious community that supports and celebrates these diverse artists.
Our Vision
Our vision is to establish Flagstaff as a hub for experimental music, where diverse voices and genres converge, and where the community actively participates in the creation and appreciation of unconventional sounds.
Our Values
We champion cutting-edge music and immerse audiences in profound experiences.
Interference Series exists because we know that when the experience of awe doesn’t come easily, it is most profound. Our dedicated, responsive audience doesn’t seek easy music or answers but always arrives expecting captivation and enchantment. We operate in alternative venues and use immersive stagecraft, resulting in a contemplative respite from the “always on” anxiety economy.
We inspire and amplify emerging generations of artists and arts-lovers.
Most of our performers are emerging or mid-career artists. By paying them a fair artistic fee, allowing them to present their work in an open, encouraging, and intimate space, and supporting them with educational connections, artist networking opportunities, and other forms of interaction, we can present some of the most meaningful performance art found in the Southwest.
Our Co-Curators also draw on their international networks of world-class artists to present trailblazing performances that are poetically charged while allowing different points of interest for audience members of varied ages and backgrounds. They strive for every event to be financially and aesthetically accessible.
We provide a vehicle for creative authenticity, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Many of our programs are adventurous, participatory, co-creation events for those audience members who are interested in joining a guest artist’s journey. Our audience includes musicians, astronomers, visual artists, engineers, students, data scientists, and other creative people who treat our events as a meeting place. People come early and stay long after performances that foster invigorating, revelatory conversations with the artists. This has turned into a community-powered creative incubator.
